Ratner Touts LI Arena Plan

UNIONDALE, NY-Following Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano‘s selection of Forest City Ratner Cos. to redevelop the Nassau Coliseum here, FCRC chairman Bruce Ratner said the result will be “one of the greatest arena in the world.” Speaking at a news conference Friday, Ratner said he would remake the aging arena and the surrounding 77 acres of blacktop into a sports and entertainment complex that will become a destination for county residents, according to Newsday.

Ratner, whose Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn will become the new home for the Islanders hockey franchise that now plays at the coliseum, said he hopes to relocate the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the Islanders’ Connecticut-based minor league affiliate, to the coliseum after renovations are completed. He also is in negotiations with the Atlantic 10, Big 10 and Pac 12 college basketball divisions to hold tournaments there, Newsday reported.

The $229-million FCRC proposal for the coliseum, which must be approved by county lawmakers, calls for a 2,000-seat indoor theatre, an outdoor amphitheater, up to seven restaurants, a bowling alley, a multiscreen movie theater, an ice skating rink and retail space.
